RURAL CHENOA, Ill. -- A local couple is dead following a Sunday night crash in rural McLean County. They leave behind nine children.
Area police are working to determine what caused that crash, especially since it was a route the couple knew well.
Sunday night, Eldon and Stephanie Kaeb were headed to Wisconsin to pick up supplies for their farm.
The McLean County Coroner says it's a trip they made almost weekly.
Shortly after 9 p.m. the Kaebs, having just left a family gathering, were headed northbound on 3360 East, or Weston Blacktop, preparing to cross Route 24.
At the same time, a semi tractor trailer was approaching that intersection, heading West on 24 toward Chenoa.
Police say it was the Kaebs who, on that dark stretch of road, apparently missed a stop sign.
"There were skid marks at the scene. They apparently did see the stop sign too late, and were not able to stop," said Trooper Dustin Pierce of Illinois State Police, district 8. "They went underneath the semi and caused the back two axles of the semi trailer to go over the back two axles of the vehicle they were driving."
Eldon and Stephanie Kaeb, 52 and 45 years old respectively, died in the wreck.
A Tuesday autopsy showed that both Eldon and Stephanie Kaeb died of multiple blunt force injuries.
Meantime, their nine children, who range in age from early 20's to about six, are being cared for by other family members.

Few Answers Surface in Fatal McLean Co. Crash

By: Jacob Long, WMBD/WYZZ-TV
Updated: October 9, 2012
McLEAN COUNTY - More information surfaced Tuesday after a fatal crash in McLean County, but authorities in charge of the investigation still have a mystery on their hands.

They do not know what caused the crash, and they're not confident they will ever know the answer to that question.

"It's one of the things we are trying to figure out, but we might never know," said Illinois State Police trooper Joe Dittmer.

The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. Sunday night at the intersection of Rt. 24 and County Road 3360 East near Weston.

Pronounced dead on the scene were 52-year-old Eldon Kaeb and his wife 42-year-old Stephanie Kaeb of Arrowsmith.

Eldon was driving as the couple traveled north, but they failed to stop at a stop sign and slammed into a semi tractor trailer traveling west.

Preliminary autopsy results shows Eldon died of multiple blunt force injuries with a specific concentration to his head and chest areas.

Stephanie also died from multiple blunt force injuries, including the head chest and abdomen.

Coroner Beth Kimmerling said she has ordered toxicology testing, but not because there is evidence of drug or alcohol use by the couple.

"I am fairly certain because of their faith, that is not an option," she said. The Kaebs were Apostolic Christian and belonged to a church in Forrest.

Kimmerling has also ruled out a medical event as a contributing factor to the crash and said only one cell phone was found zipped in Stephanie's purse.

It's not believed Eldon was a drowsy driver, either, since the crash happened within minutes of the couple leaving a family gathering.

"The 911 call came in between 9:15 and 9:20, but the people at that gathering thought the Kaebs left around that same time," Kimmerling said.

It's especially baffling for authorities since they believe the couple was familiar with the intersection.

Kimmerling said, "They traveled the area often. It's not like they didn't know the stop sign was not there."

In fact, the couple was headed to Wisconsin for a side job on a farm when the crash happened. They also had a dairy and grain farm in Arrowsmith.

Family friend and school bus driver for the Ridgeview School District in Colfax, Vickie Doyle, said farming was one of the couple's passions.

"It meant everything to them because the whole family farms. It's deeply rooted in the whole family. Started with their dad," Doyle said.

Doyle was one of a few people in the school district who were remembering the couple and their family Tuesday.

The Kaebs leave behind nine kids, ranging in age from around six to early 20s. Many of them attended Ridgeview before the family decided to home school.

Doyle was their bus driver, and she remembers growing up with Eldon and his 13 brothers and sisters.

"They filled up the bus," she joked.

Ridgeview teacher Carla Taylor was Stephanie's college roommate at Eureka College and knew some of her extended family.

"All I can remember is her smile, and she had a smile from ear to ear," Taylor said.

Taylor also taught some of the Kaebs' children, which are described as one of the couple's other top priorities in addition to their farming and religion.

"Those kids were everything to them. That's what they revolved their lives around," Taylor said.

The kids are now in the care of extended family, which Doyle got a sense of when she visited the family home after learning about the crash.

She said, "There's a very strong sense of family, community, and they're trying to make sense of what happened."

But it's the not knowing what caused the crash that's adding to the pain, the women expressed. They said they hope people remember the couple not by the way they died, but by how they lived.

"(They were) just one of those perfect couples. Everyone just wishes they had a couple like that. They've touched a lot of lives," Taylor said.

More answers could surface if a crash data recorder can be recovered from the couple's Chevrolet Impala.

Kimmerling said the recorder typically documents the conditions of the car at the time of a crash, but it's unclear if one can be recovered from the Kaeb's vehicle due to the extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, services are Thursday and Friday at the Forrest Apostolic Christian Church, which is where friends say you can also make donations.

BLOOMINGTON — An Arrowsmith couple died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries suffered during a two-vehicle accident Sunday night near Chenoa.
McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said Eldon and Stephanie Kaeb left a family gathering just prior to the accident and there is no evidence of drugs and/or alcohol as a contributing factor. A medical event precipitating the crash also has been ruled out, she said.
“For an unknown reason, their vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on 3360 East Road,” she said in a news release.
The vehicle collided with a semitrailer truck about 9:15 p.m. Sunday. The truck driver was not injured.
Kimmerling said Eldon Kaeb, 52, was the driver of the car and died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries to the head and chest area. Stephanie Kaeb, 45, died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries to the head, chest and abdomen.

Arrowsmith couple's death in crash called 'loss to community'
CHENOA — An Arrowsmith couple killed Sunday in a car accident were remembered Monday as hardworking, family-centered people who were assets to the community.
Eldon Kaeb, 52, and his wife, Stephanie Kaeb, 45, were pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle accident near Chenoa that was reported about 9:15 p.m. Sunday, said McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling. The couple farmed and had nine children, Kimmerling said in a news release.
“Preliminary information indicates that they had recently departed a family gathering and were heading to Wisconsin when the incident occurred,” she said.
Kimmerling said the accident involved an automobile and a semitrailer truck near the intersection of McLean County Road 3360 East and U.S. 24 just west of Weston. Kimmerling said the Kaeb vehicle was northbound on 3360 East when it collided with the westbound semi.
The couple, who were found trapped in the automobile, were pronounced dead at 11:31 p.m. at the scene. Autopsies are scheduled for today.
The driver of the truck was not injured, Kimmerling said.
The Chenoa and Colfax police departments, Illinois State Police and Chenoa and Fairbury fire departments all assisted at the scene.
The Kaebs had a grain and dairy farm, and Eldon Kaeb also worked at Bellflower Feed Mill until he had to quit about three years ago so he could focus on the farm, said mill owner Dennis McCormick. He was a dependable, hard worker who was quiet but friendly and could find the positive side of any situation, McCormick said.
“He felt God had a plan for his life,” McCormick said. “Some days would be great and some wouldn’t, but you get through it.”
Stephanie Kaeb was the more jovial and outgoing of the two, McCormick said.
He recalled visiting the Kaeb farm once and seeing her and the children working in the garden. The children were assigned their own rows of potatoes to tend, harvest and store, he said.
He remembered her saying: “I want to make sure my kids know where food comes from. Things don’t just pop up out of the ground. You have to work for them.”
McCormick called the couple “a loss for the community.”

Poems and Jokes For This Weather

Every season has its special beauty and autumn is no exception. Watching the trees turn from a uniform green to all varieties of gold, yellow and red is a spectacular experience. One can almost be blinded by the fiery brilliance. How can it be that all this beauty is sign of death and decay? With all this beauty there is a certain sadness in knowing that the changing colors foreshadow the arrival of a long cold winter

  1. It was so cold . . .
